Farewell exhibition of the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover with Kain Karawahn and group exhibition of regional and international artists

With BrennWEITEN @ ArtAffair as the second part of the participatory project ‘BrennWEITEN’ realised in 2023, the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover is continuing the concept of Berlin artist Kain Karawahn, which was initiated in various districts of Hanover and accompanied by a seminar on fire competence, and which deals with the relationship between humans and fire in the visual and performing arts in theory and practice.

In 1964, the first major exhibition of Friedensreich Hundertwasser‘s work in Germany took place at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover. Sixty years later, an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Faust in the capital of Lower Saxony explores the artistic and architectural legacy of one of the most famous artists of the 20th century in Germany.

Multimediale Kunst aus Polen und Deutschland

Under the title TRANSMISSION, the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover is developing an extensive, Polish-German urban art project which, in addition to its presence at the venues Städtische Galerie KUBUS and Kunsthalle Faust, will also intervene in the public space between the locations along the course of the Leine river with around 25 positions and use it as a multimedia venue.

While Lichtzeit-Labor I focussed more on general experimental research in the field of new auditory and visual media, Lichtzeit-Labor II focuses on the interaction between humans and nature: communication and energy transfer.

Prologue: The year is 1965, and Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin applies for a patent in the USA for a ground-breaking invention: the bag made of weldable plastic with handles. At the beginning of the 21st century, the plastic bag has not only become the epitome of consumption in urban societies, regardless of its political orientation, it has also long symbolised the catastrophic consequences for our environment and the pollution of the world’s oceans.

Interactive media works and live streaming between Los Angeles (USA), Tijuana (MEX) and Hanover (D)

In a cooperation between the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover and the independent organisation NettNett, based in Tijuana, Mexico, and the independent artist group Visuales.LucidInterval, based in Vertexx, USA, Mexican and Californian artists sample audio and video material from the internet and their own recordings relating to the current political situation in America. The edited outputs are transmitted to the Kunsthalle Faust via downloads and live streams and transformed into a complete work of art.

A multimedia exhibition from Oceania

With the exhibition ‘Ocean Memories’, the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover is showing a selection of contemporary photographs and videos as well as 3D prints by artists from Oceania. The Pacific Ocean – Te Moananui-a-Kiwa – is the largest populated habitat on earth. The participating artists see themselves as indigenous people of the South Pacific and live and work in Aotearoa New Zealand. (more…)

Under the title ‘Replication’, the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V. is presenting an extensive multimedia project at the Kesselhaus Linden. The title refers to the ability of a system to make copies of itself, as can be observed in viral processes, for example. The world is experiencing a shift towards urbanisation. Our cities today are characterised by enormous processes of architectural, social and urban political change. As an interdisciplinary exhibition and research project, ARCHEtypus – Utopias of Social Architecture examines the transformation processes between past and future utopias using historical examples. The thematic crystallisation point is formed by 60 image text panels in the integrated exhibition ‘SOS Brutalism – Save the Concrete Monsters! With the Bild-con-Text project, the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V. is showing award-winning comic art for the first time in a cultural centre in the context of contemporary art in an exhibition. Under the title Adieu, the Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V. is showing works by former association and board member Stephan Derben in his sculptor’s studio at Hallerstraße 29a, accompanied by a photo reportage by photographer Michael Hauri and an audiovisual composition by Alexander Derben. The supporting programme and background will be provided by artist and sister Jana Kluge and publicist Michael Stoeber.

Jens Hof-memorial exhibition

Arrival and Farewell is the title of the multi-part exhibition on the occasion of the Hamburg-born painter Jens Hoff, who worked in Hanover and died at the end of 2018. The project, organised by Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V. in cooperation with Galerie Holbein 4 and Kunstkreis Laatzen, aims to make the extensive work of the artist, who is little known in Hanover, accessible to a wider public in three largely parallel, coordinated exhibitions, starting with a retrospective at Kunsthalle Faust and special subject themes at the other exhibition venues. The Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V., in cooperation with curators and institutions such as the Environmental Centre, the Wissenschaftsladen Hannover and the Pestel Institut Hannover, presents the exhibition FoodFuturesArt, which deals with the problems of future nutrition. The international exhibition and performance project will use paintings, photographs, videos, installations and performances to provide indications of the changes that need to take place in today’s eating habits in order to ensure a conscious and healthy diet in the light of climate change and in the shadow of the ever-increasing population rate in the coming decades. A multimedia encounter between artists from Munich and Hanover

The Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V. in co-operation with the Neue Münchener Künstlergenossenschaft presents the exhibition Territorien. Possession, Power, Domination – The starting point for an artistic exploration of the concept of the territorial is the encounter between two groups of artists from the south and north of Germany, each organised in and via sponsoring associations. From a pre-selection by the respective art association, a committee defines a selection of six positions for the exhibitions in Hanover (2017) and Munich (2018). (more…)



Boondocks III Hanover

International multimedia and performance project

The international exhibition project Boondocks III Hanover expands on the objectives of the Boondocks predecessors and the Urban Touch exhibition. The project directs the gaze to the centre of urban society, uses media works and installations in the Kunsthalle Faust and performative and participatory actions in the urban space to reflect on its restructuring and changing values and at the same time examines the scope for action of the ‘public cause’. Boondocks III Hanover intervenes in the no man’s land between public and private territories in Hanover’s urban wilderness and at the same time provides access to new cultural territory. (more…)

Bullet Channel

Installation and multimedia project by Chinese-German artist Liu Guangyun on the subject of migration and identity

A dictionary, bullet holes and a revolver are the ingredients in Liu Guangyun’s 2013 work ‘Bullet Channel’, which centres on a Chinese-German dictionary that has accompanied the artist since the 1980s. Guangyun placed 26 personal documents between the pages – a visa, his passport, a registration certificate, a certificate of good conduct and so on – attached the book to the wall and fired three shots at it from a distance of five metres.
