A multimedia encounter between artists from Munich and Hanover
The Kunstverein Kunsthalle Hannover e.V. in co-operation with the Neue Münchener Künstlergenossenschaft presents the exhibition Territorien. Possession, Power, Domination – The starting point for an artistic exploration of the concept of the territorial is the encounter between two groups of artists from the south and north of Germany, each organised in and via sponsoring associations. From a pre-selection by the respective art association, a committee defines a selection of six positions for the exhibitions in Hanover (2017) and Munich (2018).
Borrowed from the Latin ‘territorium’ in the 16th century, the term initially stood for ‘urban area’. Even in today’s linguistic usage, territory refers to an area that is not always clearly delimited and to which a claim to ownership, power or sovereignty is made. Six artists from Munich, together with three artists from Hanover, will be exploring current issues of space and borders in a multi-layered and multi-media approach at the Kunsthalle Faust.
Our cities are increasingly undergoing enormous processes of architectural, social and urban policy change. Social restructuring and changing values require a redefinition of urban space in both a positive and negative sense. The upgrading of entire neighbourhoods through redevelopment processes in the context of the transformation from an industrial to a service society, the use of environmentally friendly mobility systems or the creation of traffic-calmed city centres go hand in hand with the privatisation of public space and the creation of ‘no-go areas’ and gentrification processes.
Territorial claim is also an individual state of mind and can therefore be changed. This is the creative approach of the invited and local artists to break up familiar structures and formulate new perspectives.
A separately funded art education programme offers a panel discussion ‘Who owns the city?’ as well as several workshops and guided tours.
