Transformation und Die Tüte am Ende der Plastik

Transformation und Die Tüte am Ende der Plastik

Installation & sound sculpture: Deborah Geppert, Felix Ermacora (Dresden)
In context: A collection of trade and museum bags

Prologue: The year is 1965, and Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin applies for a patent in the USA for a ground-breaking invention: the bag made of weldable plastic with handles. At the beginning of the 21st century, the plastic bag has not only become the epitome of consumption in urban societies, regardless of its political orientation, it has also long symbolised the catastrophic consequences for our environment and the pollution of the world’s oceans.

Three artistic positions have joined forces on a mission: In the exhibition title, reminiscent of Kurt Schwitters’ word creations and in the spirit of Marcel Duchamp, Dr Norbert Nobis presents plastic bags from various retail sectors and museum visits as readymades, the result of a long-standing passion for collecting. Beyond their aesthetic appearance, the artefacts prove that the art and culture industry also has its share of CO2 emissions and climate change.

In contrast, Deborah Geppert and Felix Ermacora – both graduates of the Dresden University of Fine Arts – use spatial installations and sound sculptures to thematise the ambivalent relationship between humans and nature. Nature as a place of longing and retreat is diametrically opposed to the overexploitation of nature and its resources. In the works of the artist duo, natural materials meet artificial imitations. For example, a wooden shelter stands on an artificial lake shore as the legacy of a survival training course in the forest, plastic sheets appear to be piled up into polymorphic crystal structures, and a fox, portrayed by a night vision camera, seems to ask whether the multiple of its likeness will end up in a museum bag.

WORKSHOP
Hör-Piersch
Field recording workshop with the artists Deborah Geppert and Felix Ermacora

“Field recording” is the name given to the passion for recording authentic audio images and refers to the process of recording sound outside of a studio environment. The workshop offers an overview of field recording and explores various techniques, strategies and tools. After an impulse on technical aspects and recording techniques, the practical part follows: Participants can experiment outdoors with recording equipment, creative listening exercises and self-collected material. The recordings serve as material for the subsequent composing process.

Date 19.06.2023 Duration: 2 x 2 h Location Kunsthalle Faust

WORKSHOP
Of air and potato flow
Experimental workshop with Christiane Oppermann and Harro Schmidt

The workshop duo will use chemical and physical phenomena to open up a field of experimentation for participants to generate electricity from nature. The power sources and experimental set-ups become part of small kinetic sculptures, light objects or installations. The resulting works can then be taken home.
